The Brain Boost Project: Strengthening the Skills That Stick

Awarded $1494

Thank you, Putnam Education Foundation, for supporting our vision for students! My name is Kara Page, and I am the K-2 Instructional Coach at Putnam County Primary School.

I am incredibly grateful and excited to have received funding for our executive functioning project, which will support students in our summer ELO program, Camp Read-A-Lot, and will continue in our EIP classrooms next school year. Camp Read-A-Lot is designed for rising first graders who struggle with reading fluency, particularly those who show strengths in decoding but need support with automaticity, attention, focus, memory, and other executive functioning skills.

This grant will provide equipment and tools to help students strengthen those executive functioning skills through movement, regulation, and structured support. We know that students need to regulate before we educate, and this project allows us to create opportunities for students to improve focus, memory, and self-regulation while also building stronger reading habits and fluency.

What excites me most about this project is that its impact will go far beyond summer camp. These resources will not only support students during ELO but will also become part of our EIP classrooms during the school year, allowing us to continue helping students grow long after summer ends.

My hope is that students will build confidence, independence, and stronger reading success while also learning the self-management skills they need to thrive in the classroom. Thank you for investing in our students and helping us create opportunities for lasting growth and success.
